Spotlight on President Graeme Harley - Vintage Tractor collector and assorted machinery
Graeme was introduced to the hobby by Norm Geary in 1975 and his first tractor was a Massey Harris 30K. He then acquired a 1925 F Model Fordson which was stored at Norms for 20 years.
Graeme joined the Army at 16 and his hobby was put on hold. He got married in 1983 and his hobby was still on hold due to commitments to his family and young children.
In 2000, he got the Fordson back and started trying to restore it, which was a very big job and took a lot of time. As his son, Steven, was keen and the Fordson would take a long time to restore, he bought a 1951 David Brown Cropmaster from a friend. It was a two seater and was in running condition so he was able to work on it but still be able to take it to rallies in the condition it was in, plus, being a two seater, Steven could ride on the tractor with him.
Steven and Graeme went to their first Vintage Tractor Pull at Ballan, but their little Cropmaster did not even move the sled. They then went to the National Rally at Heyfield in 2003. At this Rally they met the guys and girls from the Sale Vintage Tractor Club (SVTC), which they joined and have not missed an SVTC rally since then. Over the years with the SVTC, Graeme acted as the treasurer for a few years and has been involved in as many events as possible. As Steven was under 18 and could not drive in the tractor pull, he became one of the sled operators and carried out this job every year from when he was about 13 or 14.
The family moved to Nyora to live in 2015 and became actively involved with the Korumburra Working Horse and Tractor Rally Club (KWHTC). Incidentally, this is Graeme's home town: he grew up on a dairy farm just out of town. At the moment, he is the President of the KWHTC and is regularly involved with organising their rallies. His tractor collection has expanded to 16 tractors (with two more as garden ornaments). Out of the 16, 13 are running tractors that they take to rallies, one is in the workshop being worked on at the moment, and there are two in the back of the shed waiting for their turn in the workshop.
They are not really looking for more tractors, what they are concentrating on at the moment is getting all the tractors complete. They don’t do full-on paint restorations (although they have done two, a Ferguson TEA 20 and a Fordson F Model). What they aim for is good mechanical condition and originality; they love to play with them, not show them and win prizes for looks. They regularly travel to rallies around Victoria, mainly to the local rallies in Gippsland (Korumburra, Heyfield, and Sale) as well as Warracknabeal, and occasionally Geelong.
